Speculation is rising that current Senate President Peter Courtney is going to make a run for governor in 2010. However, it would be a tough choice for the senate leader, as he would have to give up his seat to make the run. Courtney cherishes his role as ruler of the senate and he has over $230,000 in his campaign treasury and continues to raise cash from the Oregon lobby. This would likely be Courtney's only shot at governor as he will be 67 years old should he take office. His absence from the senate would open up a spirited race for Senate President in an already divisive Democratic caucus.
On the other side of the isle, some Republicans are still holding out for Rep. Greg Walden to run despite his recent mishaps with voting against renewing timber county payments, while others are pushing former gubernatorial candidate and current Senator Jason Atkinson. An accidental shooting earlier this year wounded Atkinson and a few GOPers think it helped soar his name recognition throughout the state. No candidate other than current Secretary of State Bill Bradbury has announced any intention to run for governor. Former US Senate candidate Steve Novick has also expressed interest, but no formal announcement has been made.
