GOP wants their voters back

Throughout the ever lasting and highly contentious Democratic primary campaign between Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, there was a considerable shift in voter registration across the country and particularly here in Oregon.  While the Obama campaign camped out in urban areas registering new voters, many GOP registered voters were taking advice from conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh and switched registration to keep Clinton's campaign alive, thus giving Republican nominee John McCain more free time before having to defend his position on keeping US troops in Iraq for the next 50 years.  Such efforts here in Oregon gave Democrats a voter registration edge in the fifth congressional district for the first time since Democrat Darlene Hooley took office back in 1996, a feat not easily achieved in a district that loathes immigrants and whole-heartedly supports a constitutional ban on gay marriage.

Now the Republican party wants their voters back and have started their own voter registration (or re-registration in many cases) effort.  In a recent email to their constituents, they are calling all elephant friendly voters to "update their voting records."  In a somewhat intervention style delivery, Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan encouraged potential supporters to contact their local GOP headquarters for help garnering recovery back into Republican party arms.  Perhaps a 12-step Republican recovery program is next?
