Time for Erickson to unify 5th CD

So, wealthy businessman Mike Erickson finally spoke to an Oregonian reporter about allegations he impregnated his ex-girlfriend and then paid for her abortion back in 2000.  He claims that the woman in question had some financial problems and she merely asked him for some cash and a ride to the doctor's office one day without uttering one word about a pregnancy or abortion procedure.

It seems somewhat peculiar that Erickson was so eager to help this young woman with her finances, but he neglected to inquire what she specifically needed the money for.  Doesn't sound like an act of a shrewd and savvy businessman.  And what about the doctor's appointment?  Tawnya somehow knew in advance the cost of her appointment so she asked Erickson for the cash and a ride and then went on her merry way?  Not likely.

At the time this alleged incident took place Erickson was in the prime of his life with a blossoming career and an eye for political office.  An illegitimate child would clearly have been an inconvenience for his future plans.  Fast forward eight years and Erickson finds himself in a hotly contested GOP primary campaign against a well-known (and considerably under-funded) conservative politician who uses this discovered information to his advantage.  What's Erickson's best possible response?

If he's a team player and truly wants a win for the Oregon GOP (which is a foreign concept to many Oregon Republicans in recent years), then he would drop out of the race and go about his other business.  The divisive nature of this issue will cause the supporters of both Erickson and his opponent Kevin Mannix so much post-election resentment no matter what the result, thus providing the Democratic nominee some unexpected support in the general.

Everyone is entitled to a private life, including politicians and candidates for office.  However, when you put yourself in the political limelight expect to lead by example.

Way Off Base

You are crazy if you think a Democrat is going to make a stink about whether the abortion happened or not or the circumstances behind what did or did not happen.

Every Democrats for CD 5 is pro-choice, which means it will be a non-issue in the general election.

down with erickson!

Erickson's an empty suit.

Erickson is self funding his campaign and has NO MAJOR ENDORSEMENTS- whereas Kevin has many major ones. Erickson has spent over $1 million of his own money thus far - trying to buy his way in to politics. Erickson does not have the people's support, nor does he deserve it.

He refuses to debate Kevin Mannix on any issue and hopes he can blind the public with tv ads until they vote.

Erickson has no political experience and is merely a rich bachelor.

Oh yea, and he drops off women at abortion clinics with the line 'i call ya sometime'

GO KEVIN!!

erickson should drop out

Erickson is an empty suit, has no real/effective plans, and started negative campainging right from the get-go. He will not debate Kevin and refuses to talk to the media - what kind of representative-like behavior is that? He's a coward and hopes to ride out his self-funded campaign to the end, in hopes of convincing us that Kevin Mannix is evil by using an overkill of lying ads and flyers.

Go back to your mansion, Erickson, and leave the politics to Kevin

You're right and you missed the point...

No Democrat is going to attack Erickson for paying for an abortion but if you think the story ends there... you need to turn the lights on.

I suspect voters - even District 5 Republicans - are getting sick of self-righteous candidates from their party talking the talk in the sunshine and then doin' dirties in the dark. It's called hypocrisy and what we've had for the past 8 years of Republican control should be called "Hypocracy."

You can bet any Democrat worth his or her salt will be asking the question, "Would you want this man to date your daughter?" That ought to be worth a few thousand votes.

sir, You just indicted

sir,
You just indicted Mannix with your statement. OK so you say Erickson is self funding his campaign and then go on to say he has no major endorsements.

Yet Erickson has rasied more money than Mannix even if you subtract the money he put into it.

So if Mannix has all this support then shouldn't he be raising more money? Aside from Erickson's personal wealth?
