Robert Packwood served in the United States Senate from 1968 until he was forced to resign in 1995 following allegations that he abused, harassed and sexually assaulted a group of women, including lobbyists and staffers. And Neil Goldschmidt, who served as Governor, U.S. Secretary of Transportation, and Mayor of Portland, met with considerable disgrace after he admitted to having a sexual relationship with a fourteen-year-old babysitter while in his thirties.

To get a handle on why so many of our best and brightest rationalized, forgave, covered up and even facilitated Goldschmidt's crime, I met with the head of a local clinic that treats sexually abused children. He told me that the first thing we can do is be more accurate with our language.
As he put it, men in their thirties don't have "sexual relationships" with fourteen-year-old children. They rape them.
As a wordsmith, "Wally," I'm sure you'll appreciate the difference.
