Mike Erickson was the GOP nominee-in-waiting for the 5th congressional district until Rep. Darlene Hooley announced her retirement and the seat opened up. Oregon GOP party chair Vance Day has referred to Erickson as a “strong candidate,” but all party officials have stopped short of giving their whole hearted endorsements to the 2006 candidate. While Erickson would be the most prudent GOP candidate in terms of fundraising, given his multi-millionaire status, there are now serious contenders re-thinking a bid for the open seat. Below are a few endorsements that could sway Oregon GOP voters in the coming months.
1. Senator Gordon Smith
2. Rep. Greg Walden
3. Senator John McCain
4. All County Chairs Collectively in the 5th CD including John Bell (Benton), Tom Devanney (Clackamas), Art Anderson (Lincoln), Wayne Brady (Marion), Jim Anderson (Multnomah), Helga Thompson (Polk), and Joseph Jacob (Tillamook).
5. Senator Mark Hatfield
6. Governor Vic Atiyeh
7. 2006 Candidate for Governor Ron Saxton
8. Oregon Right to Life
9. Associated Oregon Industries
10. State Senator Jackie Winters
