Obama gains two Oregon superdelegates

Barack Obama picked up two superdelegate endorsements from Oregon: Democratic State Chair Meredith Wood Smith, and Democratic National Committeewoman Wayne Kinney.  That brings Obama’s Oregon superdelegate total to six, with two for Obama and four undecided.

Wood Smith endorses Obama

Obama won 31 of Oregon's pledged delegates in the primary (Clinton took 21) but it looks like the win is also helping his superdelegate count.

Meredith Wood Smith, chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Oregon, is the second of Oregon's 12 superdelegates to get on the Obama boat since the primary.

She announced her decision in a column published in today's Oregonian.

She says Obama "demonstrates the leadership needed to get us out of Iraq, restore our economy, begin the tough job of providing health care for all Americans and, most of all, heal the divisions in our nation."

Defazio commits, Wyden still up in the air

As the Oregon primary looms near, the race to secure more superdelegates continues to heat up. Barack Obama's campaign announced today the endorsement of Congressman Peter Defazio, adding to current endorsers Congressmen Earl Blumenauer and David Wu.

War critics and anti-Gordon Smith enthusiasts congregated at all of the Senator’s offices throughout the state Wednesday to voice their opposition to his reelection efforts, and, in some cases, to engage in a broader protest against President Bush’s Iraq policy.

The statewide protests, which were held in Portland, Medford, Eugene, Pendleton and Bend, were organized by the Democratic Party of Oregon, and, according to DPO Communications Director Marc Siegel, were a first for Oregon.

Dems plan protest at Gordon Smith offices

In what is becoming an increasingly hostile reelection environment for Gordon Smith, The Democratic Party of Oregon is planning protests this Wednesday at all of the junior Senator's offices throughout the state, with the Portland and Eugene offices expected to be the best attended.
