Martha Schrader, a Clackamas County Commissioner who has emerged on the short list for Rep. Hooley’s replacement, said she is “shocked and awed” that the Congresswoman has decided to not seek re-election.
While Schrader said she will not make a decision until next week after talking to her family, she also said she is certainly “open to it.”
“It’s gratifying to get some consideration, it’s reflecting for me that I’ve been doing a good job at this level of government. It’s very gratifying and humbling,” she said.
Schrader noted that Hooley was doing a fabulous job, and said that she had spoken to the Congresswoman previously about mentoring women in politics.
Schrader also spoke of her respect for Paul Evans, the other name being floated around today.
“I think Paul is a wonderful person,” she said.
When asked whether Evan’s decision has the potential to influence her own, she said that “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.”

Martha Schrader
Martha Schrader is the one person who can be a strong candidate in the general election. Democrats have got to field a candidate that can draw moderate Republican votes away from the Republican contender. Martha Schrader is the ONLY candidate capable of making that happen.
While several well intended names crop up, only one has the political cache` to carry a general election in such a diversified district. Martha Schrader is the only person capable of garnering the support of surrounding county commission colleagues who will be vital in securing votes in their respective areas.
Experience matters. Leadership matters. Most importantly, the ability to get elected matters. Commissioner Schrader is the one person who possesses all three qualities.
