If anyone can figure out what Gordon Smith is trying to say in the following video, post you comments below or send me an email, because I'm totally confused.
I think Mr. Smith's comments are pretty clear. He is telling us that marriage laws are religiously based. He is also reminding us that we profess separation of church and state. He tells us he is Mormon.
He recalls the great persecution his ancestors suffered at the hands of the federal government - he doesn't think the federal government should be making and forcing laws that come from a particular religion. We cannot have it both ways. We cannot have a secular government AND religion based laws. I am not gay. But I think we have no business in anyone else's bedroom - and I think this is prurient and fear based. It's none of our business if people wish to legalize their partnerships and call it marriage. Heterosexuals can manage to destroy the institution of marriage without blaming it on gays..........
Smith's comments are not only unclear, they're completely muddled by his apology (that Esteve writes about in the Oregonian online version today) in which Smith reiterates his opposition to gay marriage.
Smith is a conservative wolf trying to be a moderate in sheep's clothing. He consistently votes to the hardcore right when he's not in an election year--and then tries to moderate his positions when the Oregon electorate is watching.
Its disgraceful. And frankly, Oregonians should have enough of this con artist.
The "Carla" above sounds an awful lot like Merkley's ex-"netroots" staffer (who currently works for Merkley's media guy Kari Chisholm). Would that make her a cougar in chicken's clothing? Someone help me extend the analogy here.
I'm not sure what "con" she is referring to. I have never misunderstood Smith's support on GLBT issues to include gay marriage. (For that matter, the same goes for Obama.)
If she as a Merkley surrogate are saying that the Speaker has finally spoken in favor of full marriage equality then I applaud him... finally.
Big speechs, big endorsements, and big donations were spread throughout Oregon this week. Both Democrats on the Portland City Council and newly appointed GOP State Rep. Matt ...>
