Steve Marks Unveils "Higher Marks for Sustainable Agriculture"
Second in the "Higher Marks" series of major policy initiatives
(Salem, OR) – Today, Steve Marks, Democratic candidate in Oregon's 5th Congressional District, released the second in a series the "Higher Marks" policy initiatives. Higher Marks for Sustainable Agriculture proposes the creation of a center at Oregon State University that will focus on sustaining Oregon's farms and farm land for the production of food, fiber and nursery products through applied resource conservation technology.
"Higher Marks for Sustainable Agriculture outlines one of the initiatives I will undertake in Congress to address the future of agricultural production in Oregon," said Marks. "World food supply will have to double by 2050 to meet the growing demands of an increasing population. Oregon needs to make the most of its agricultural land while protecting important resources to insure our own food security and to supply wholesome food to national and international markets," continued Marks.
"Our state, our nation and our planet face significant agricultural challenges now and in the coming decades, it should be our public policy to help our farmers continue the long-term sustainability of our agricultural lands," continued Marks. "My Higher Marks for Sustainable Agriculture action plan gives voters a glimpse of what they can expect from me in Washington. When it comes to moving Oregon forward to meet the challenges of tomorrow, change starts right here in the 5th Congressional District."
An important component of the center will be to provide services to farmers who voluntarily seek expert assistance in making decisions about managing their farm and land. Many farmers are now having their products certified by independent third party evaluators that certify that the product was produced in a responsible manner. "We need to help provide the knowledge and support to assist farmers in meeting this market demand," said Marks.
