Dems plan protest at Gordon Smith offices

In what is becoming an increasingly hostile reelection environment for Gordon Smith, The Democratic Party of Oregon is planning protests this Wednesday at all of the junior Senator's offices throughout the state, with the Portland and Eugene offices expected to be the best attended.

"Gordon Smith is a political opportunist who Oregonians can't trust to stand up for Oregon when it counts," DPO Chair Meredith Wood Smith said in a statement. "He was one of George Bush's biggest cheerleaders. He gave him blank check after blank check for Iraq. Now that it's election season, he wants to convince people he's on our side. But Oregonians know better. We know the difference between an election year speech and the resolve to bring the troops home. Oregonians have a U.S. Senator they cannot trust. He will say anything to win re-election."

According to Marc Siegel, Communications Director for the DPO, such a protest has never been staged.

"This is a first for Oregon, to protest outside all five offices at once, so we don't know what to expect. We want as many folks as possible to come out," Siegel said. "Certainly, we expect Portland and Eugene to be the largest."

Siegel also said that none of the candidates hoping to challenge Smith next year will attend or speak at any of the protests.

Smith's office did not respond to a request for comment.
