This cycle’s Democratic presidential primary has thrown the spotlight on superdelegates, and one of Oregon’s own today urged both Sens. Obama and Clinton to change the tones of their campaigns.
In a letter to both candidates, Rep. Peter DeFazio, who is unpledged as of yet, stated that they should “run the next six weeks of your campaign against McCain, not against the other Democrat.”
“In the end, it is the candidate who can take the fight to McCain and win that deserves my support and, most importantly, the support of the Democratic Party,” he wrote.
DeFazio charged the Senators with losing sight of the general election, and instead intensifying the heated rhetoric in their quest for the nomination.
Superdelegates constitute approximately 20 percent of the delegates who will gather at the convention in August, and do not have to vote for a particular candidate.
