Bunn makes a comeback as GOP still fizzles

Nothing terribly exciting occurred at yesterday’s candidate filing extravaganza at the Capitol. The biggest surprise goes to former Congressman Jim Bunn who decided at the last minute to file for a state House seat in Yamhill county. Perhaps he will take a cue from Eliot Spitzer’s recent woes and leave the sex scandals to the Democrats this time around.

The crumbling state of the Oregon GOP became more apparent yesterday when they filed no candidates for Attorney General or for any of the vulnerable incumbent Democratic Senate seats. Looks like GOP Chair Vance Day has some splainin’ to do.

The battle is on for the fifth congressional district on both sides of the aisle. Despite rumors of a possible exit from the race, businessman Mike Erickson has decided to put more of his millions to the test against well-known, but to some extent perennial candidate Kevin Mannix. On the Democratic side, State Senator Kurt Schrader might be forced to make a large personal donation to his own campaign against activist Steve Marks.

Don't make the mistake of laying the lack of candidates at Vance Day's feet. There is a huge disconnect between the party and the legislature, with barely a passing acknowledgment that the other even matters in the process.

Until the legislature realizes that the party provides the boots on the ground for campaigns and doesn't particularly like being told one thing by the legislators just to get through the primary, and then changing their mind for political expedience...and until the party realizes their fundraising success is directly tied to the public actions of the legislature and it better start doing a better job of creating a farm team and getting folks some elected experience at the local level, instead of just acting as the litmus test for shrill and strident social conservatives, the republicans are in for a continuing rough ride.
