Supporters of U.S. Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) gathered outside of the KGW studios Thursday evening to cheer on the Oregon House Speaker before his first scheduled debate with U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton).

About 45 people lined both sides of SW Johnson street waving signs and chanting, “Hey Hey, ho ho, Gordon Smith has got to go.”

Intermixed with the crowd was a small group of people waving signs in support of Constitution Party candidate Dave Brownlow. Brownlow was not invited to participate in the debate.

Local Area Dems Support Jeff Merkley

The author, Britten Chase, must have left early. I was among the crowd at KGW on Thursday night, and by the time House Speaker Jeff Merkley and his wife Mary arrived for a pre-debate rally, there were over 100 people spilling into the streets (SW Jefferson St, not Johnson which is in NW.) Labor Commish Brad Avakian did a warm-up and introduced Jeff, who spoke for about ten minutes. No sign of Gordon Smith supporters (they must've been sequestered in their mansions.)
When Jeff went into the studio, the crowd went over to Blitz in the Pearl, and we were joined by leaders of several county Democratic Parties, Gov Barbara Roberts, and we all enjoyed watching the debates. Jeff & Mary joined us after the debate and visited with the crowd. When I spoke to Jeff he was quite pleased with the debate and ready to meet Smith again on Monday for round two.
Kudos to moderator Tracey Barrie for keeping the contestants focused and on time and topic.
