PORTLAND -- No Arnold? No problem. U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Pendleton) still held his lunchtime fundraiser at the Portland Convention Center Friday, despite the fact that featured speaker Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Calif.) was unable to attend.
Schwarzenegger was unable to attend the fundraiser at the last minute because of California’s budget issues, but the crowd was still going to be treated to an appearance by the governor via satellite.
About 300 Oregonians RSVP’d for the $1,000 a plate luncheon that helped build Smith’s warchest for his re-election campaign against Oregon House Speaker Jeff Merkley (D-Portland).
According to Smith spokeswoman Lindsay Gilbride, after the lunch the incumbent Senator would also be participating in an economic summit with local community and business leaders. None of Smith's Friday events were open to the public.
