McCain within margin of error, new poll shows

Don't paint the entire West Coast blue just yet.

A poll released by SurveyUSA shows that if the general election were held in Oregon today, 48 percent of voters would back U.S. Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), and 45 percent would vote for U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). These numbers are within the poll's margin of error.

The poll also shows that Obama is going to have to fight harder for votes in Oregon than he will for any other state on the west coast. According to the poll, Obama is beating McCain by a solid 15 percentage points in Washington, where he is winning 55-40 percent. In California, 53 percent of voters back Obama, while 41 percent said they will vote for McCain.

The Oregon data surveyed 547 likely voters from June 16-19, and has a +/- margin of error of 4.3 percentage points.
