With former Governer Vic Atiyeh anointing Rep. Greg Walden as the 2010 GOP nominee for governor at this past weekend's Dorchester Conference, it looks like Oregon will have yet another congressional seat opening up in two years.
Any potential Republican candidate who wants to run for one of the safest "crown jewels" the GOP has to offer might be wise to get a head start by running for an uncontested primary statewide seat in 2008. It's too bad the Dems aren't putting anyone credible forward this time around to make inroads in that district in the future, but presumably they're content with having 4/5 Congressional districts in a 51/49 state and are willing to write that district off at the expense of the others.
This will become particularly clear come redistricting in 2010 one way or another when they likely make their other districts safer at the expense of this one.
